Grand Rapids, MI – PBS affiliate, WGVU, has violated it’s own standards, IRS tax code, and FCC regulations in order to exclude Libertarian candidate, Scotty Boman from it’s U.S. Senate candidate forums. On October 23rd WGVU organized a forum with Democrat Debbie Stabenow, and Pete Hoekstra, which they first broadcasted on October 24th.
In 1994 Libertarian U.S. Senate candidate Jon Coon litigated his way into that year’s PBS debate, along with the other balloted United States Senate candidates. That ruling was later over-turned with the caveat that broadcasters may exclude candidates only if they have pre-established minimum standards. In 2008, General Manager Michael Walenta provided the following outline of the WGVU standards to Scotty Boman when he ran for U.S. Senate that year:
- the person seeking to participate must have qualified for the ballot;
- the candidate must be running a visible and comprehensive campaign as determined by WGVU; and
- the candidate must show a certain fixed level of support - at least 5% - in professionally conducted public opinion polls.
In 2008 Boman conceded he could not meet criteria 3, because he had not been included in any statewide polls. So he recently contracted a polling firm, on his own, in light of the same partisan bias being built into 2012 polls: “Clearly, the people commissioning state-wide polls decided to infuse them with a partisan bias by only including their two favorite candidates,” said Boman, “So I paid to have a state-wide scientific poll conducted to see how I was doing, and I made this poll more balanced by including the three most active candidates, instead of just two.”
The Poll results showed that Boman met the qualifications to participate in the traditional televised debate on WGVU. The recent poll of nine hundred and seventy likely Michigan voters was conducted on October 5th and 6th by Gravis Marketing -- a national, non-partisan research firm based in Florida. With the Libertarian included as a third option, Democrat Debbie Stabenow polled 48.0% to Republican Pete Hoekstra’s 39.3% with Scotty Boman favored by 7.0%. The remaining 5.7% were undecided or preferred another candidate.
Stabenow said she would end the “Debate on debates” within days of Poll results being released that showed that Boman met the qualifications to participate in the traditional televised debate on WGVU.
In response to Boman’s Inquiry, Assistant General Manager, Ken Kolbe wrote, “You were not included in our candidate forums because in our opinion you do not meet the eligibility criteria. Specifically, you have failed to show that you have achieved a five percent level of consistent support in legitimate, professional, non-partisan public opinion polls. To our knowledge, the Gravis Marketing poll that you commissioned is the only poll in which you appear. Since it is a one-time poll commissioned by you, it fails to meet the above criteria.”
Boman commented that, “The requirement that I be included in two of these polls appears to be a new requirement designed to get around the fact that I met the original one. Furthermore, the only reason I paid for it, was that the other polls were rigged to favor only two candidates by excluding all others.” Boman also cited an earlier scientific state-wide poll, “I polled 6% as a potential primary candidate in a February 14th study conducted by Public Policy Polling.”
WGVU is an affiliate of 501©(3) organization, PBS. Under the Internal Revenue Code, “…all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office…voter education or registration activities with evidence of bias that (a) would favor one candidate over another; (b) oppose a candidate in some manner; or (c) have the effect of favoring a candidate or group of candidates, will constitute prohibited participation or intervention.”
FCC regulations (Title 47 United States Code), Section 399 reads, “No noncommercial educational broadcasting station may support or oppose any candidate for public office.” The FCC may revoke a station’s license or permit for willful or repeated failure to comply with such regulations.
“Ken Kolbe, needs to wake and smell the coffee; the jig is up. The façade of non-partisanship has been lifted, and what we find is bias toward Libertarians. They acknowledged me as a candidate when I was a Republican, but now that I have done twice as much campaigning and switched back to being a Libertarian, I am no longer relevant. The real reason for exclusion always has been the party label; the other excuses have been exhausted.” Said Boman.

Hoekstra Backs out of Debate with Boman and Mikkelson

Gaylord, MI – Republican United States Senate Candidate, Pete Hoekstra had agreed to debate two third Party Candidates, according to an announcement that was published in the Petoskey News on Friday October 19th. However, he withdrew from the forum shortly after the announcement was published. The forum was organized by Gaylord High School students. Their spokesperson, Kevin Brown, confirmed the change in an email to Libertarian candidate Scotty Boman.
On the previous Thursday, October 18th Hoekstra refused to include Boman in a Midland Michigan forum he had announced in a Press Release. The release criticized incumbent Debbie Stabenow for refusing to debate him and stated that he would be debating by himself. Hoekstra Campaign Manager, on October 18th Greg VanWoerkom, said of Boman’s request "He had his opportunity. This is an opportunity for Pete and Debbie to debate."
Boman remarked, “It is shameful that Mr. Hoekstra would break his promise to these high school students, if he can’t keep his promises to them, how can we trust him to keep his oath of office?” As far as the comment that I “had my chance,” Boman said, “It’s not about me having a chance to debate Hoekstra, it’s about the voters having a chance to hear from the candidates in a free and equal forum.”
Though the Hoekstra camp hasn’t indicated a connection between the attendance of minor party candidates and his cancellation, Boman said there is a precedence for this, “He made a similar cancellation on May 21st (at an event sponsored by the Romeo Area TEA Party), after I announced my return to the Libertarian Party. At this event, moderator (and talk show host) Frank Beckmann said Hoekstra had told him that my participation was the reason for the cancellation.”
“I see a consistent pattern of avoidance, “ said Boman “First Hoekstra snubs the Romeo area Tea Party, then Hoekstra’s people refuse to include me in his solo debates, now he cancels attendance at a truly independent forum, that I am attending. There is a League of Women Voters forum in Alpena tomorrow, but I bet he will skip that one too. The people of Michigan deserve better than this political gamesmanship.” Boman is disappointed in Senator Debbie Stabenow as well, “Debbie Stabenow is taking the majority vote for granted, her failure to debate is disrespectful to her constituents.”
Stabenow said she would end the “Debate on debates” within days of Poll results being released that showed that Boman met the qualifications to participate in the traditional televised debate on WGVU.

Boman Qualifies, Stabenow Cancels
Libertarian Pushes for Debate

Detroit, MI – United States Senate Candidate Debbie Stabenow backed out of participation in the traditional televised debates three days after Libertarian Scotty Boman qualified to be in them. She cited disagreements with Republican challenger Pete Hoekstra as the reason for the withdrawal in a recent press release. Since 1996 there have been two well-publicized debates between specially qualifying candidates: One on public Television at Grand Valley State University, and one hosted by the Detroit Economic Club.
Libertarian Scotty Boman qualified to be in the debates after a state-wide scientific poll showed he would likely receive 7% of the vote. Polling at 5% or better is the one requirement for participation in the televised debates that has long eluded minor party candidates. In 2008, the host public television station WGVU specifically cited this criterion as cause for not including Boman in the Senatorial debate between Jack Hoogendyk and Carl Levin. Of course, this was a "Catch 22" for the Libertarian since no scientific state-wide, general election poll that year included him as a choice.
The recent poll of nine hundred and seventy likely Michigan voters was conducted on October 5th and 6th by Gravis Marketing -- a national, non-partisan research firm based in Florida. With the Libertarian included as a third option, Democrat Stabenow polled 48.0% to Republican Hoekstra’s 39.3% with Boman favored by 7.0%. The remaining 5.7% were undecided or preferred another candidate. In a previous poll, conducted by public policy polling between February 10th and 12th, Boman, who was then considering a possible bid for the Republican nomination, received 6 % among likely Michigan Republican primary voters.
The press release in which the Gravis Poll results were announced, also quoted Boman as saying, "Now that there is a credible, independent poll showing me above the threshold for participation [in the televised debate]," Boman mused, "it will be interesting to see what kind of creative excuse they will come up with to keep me out this time."
“Well I guess I got my answer;” Boman said, “They are keeping me out by cancelling the event altogether. I don’t know if that was the motive, but it is certainly the result.” Boman remains hopeful that these opponents will have a change of heart,
“Michigan residents are best served by a lively, and thoughtful, exchange of ideas. I am willing to debate with all of my opponents, and have already had that opportunity with Republican Pete Hoekstra and Green Harley Mikkelson in the past. If Hoekstra or Stabenow wish to debate me on WGVU or at a Detroit Economic Club event, without the other being present, I will be pleased to participate.”
Boman is open to other venues too, “I have a standing offer from Liberty Town Hall at the M33 studio in Rose City to participate in such a multi-partisan debate, and the program would be available to stations around the state.”

Libertarian polls 7% in Michigan U.S. Senate race,
clearing hurdle to debate participation.

Detroit, MI – If the election for US Senate were held today, Libertarian nominee, Scotty Boman, would get 7% of Michigan’s vote according to a state-wide scientific poll. The poll of nine hundred and seventy likely Michigan voters was conducted on October 5th and 6th by Gravis Marketing -- a national, non-partisan research firm based in Florida.
It is the first general election poll of likely voters to include more than just the two, major party candidates as possible choices. With the Libertarian included as a third option, Democrat Stabenow polled 48.0% to Republican Hoekstra’s 39.3% with Boman favored by 7.0%. The remaining 5.7% were undecided or preferred another candidate.
In the same survey the Libertarian candidate was also offered as the alternative in two-candidate contests with each of the major party nominees. In those circumstances, Stabenow leads 49.0% to 29.6%, with 21.6% undecided. In a head-to-head matchup against Hoekstra the difference is even smaller with Boman garnering 22.5% to the Republican's 41.0% and 36.5% undecided.
In a previous poll, conducted by public policy polling between February 10th and 12th, Boman, who was then considering a possible bid for the Republican nomination, received 6 % among likely Michigan Republican primary voters.
While the recent poll still places Boman in a distant third place, the results are significant because a political party whose "top-of-ticket" candidate receives at least 5% of the vote is treated like a major party. After Libertarian Jon Coon got 4.2% of the US Senate vote in 1994, Michigan changed the definition of “Major Party” to mean only the top two vote-getters. This change was only cosmetic. In all other respects, the 5% threshold places the qualifying party in the top tier of political parties, including participation in primaries. The top of ticket for the 2012 election would have been Libertarian Presidential nominee, Governor Gary Johnson, but Republican Secretary of State, Ruth Johnson, refused to place him on the ballot based on her interpretation of an obscure, never before invoked or enforced, provision of state election law.
A second reason the Libertarian candidate's 7% showing is significant, is that polling at 5% or better is the one requirement for participation in the televised debates that has long eluded minor party candidates.
"Now that there is a credible, independent poll showing me above the threshold for participation [in the televised debate]," Boman mused, "it will be interesting to see what kind of creative excuse they will come up with to keep me out this time."

Activists Rally Sandy Levin To Audit The Fed.
7/24/2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Roseville, MI – Advocates of Federal Reserve System transparency will Rally outside the Roseville office of Representative Sander Levin on the morning of a critical vote. Later that morning the House of Representatives will vote on the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, H.R. 459, which was introduced by Congressman Ron Paul of Texas. The Bill has at least 271 co-sponsors, but Sander Levin is not one of them.
The gathering will include candidates for political office including Libertarian US Senate Candidate Scotty Boman, and Republican US House candidate Don Volaric. Scotty Boman said, “I am firmly behind the Libertarian slate of candidates that will be available to voters this November. At the same time, it is important to put aside partisan differences and reach across the aisle to work together on issues that affect all Americans. The harmful consequences of the Federal Reserve System and its veil of privileged secrecy is such an issue.”
Volaric is seeking the Republican nomination for the new 9th Congressional District in which Levin will be running (though Levin is currently in the old 12th District). Both Levin and the Republican nominee will be competing with Libertarian James Fulner in the general election.
When asked about H.R. 459 Fulner said, "Auditing the Fed is a no-brainier. Even my small local fraternal disorganization that only has thousands of dollars going in and out of our bank accounts for the charitable work we do has to go through an annual audit to ensure all of money is coming from and going to what we say it is and we are accountable for it. Yet, the Federal Reserve, the purse strings that hold the entire US economy together, has not been audited for decades. The American people are waking up to what the Political class and the Fed have been doing, evident by the fact the people have convinced 271 co-sponsors from both old party's to have signed on to Ron Paul's audit the fed bill. My opponent, Sandy Levin, is not among them, proof that he's still standing with the 1% while giving lip service to the 99%. Regardless of how the vote tomorrow ends up, its only one small step. 2012 probably won't be the end of the world, but it may be the end of the world as we know it. That's why the Jim Fulner Campaign is asking the folks of SE Michigan to rise up, and start their own libertarian rEVOLution”
Boman has campaigned beside Fulner, and endorses Libertarians in the general election while encouraging participation in the primaries. “It’s important to encourage candidates to support sound policies at every step of the process. So-long as every resident is forced to support primaries with their taxes, they are all entitled to vote in them.” Said Boman.

Livonia, MI – On June 2nd College professor, Scotty Boman was nominated to be the Libertarian Party of Michigan’s candidate for United States Senate, thereby securing himself a place on the November 6th ballot. Boman was opposed by Vietnam veteran and writer Erwin Haas.
The Libertarian convention was held on June 2nd, at Embassy Suites Livonia/Novi. 19525 Victor Parkway. Livonia, MI 48152. The candidates had a debate at the same location 7:30 PM Friday, June 1st. The convention business took place from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. During that time the Party platform was debated and candidates were nominated to a variety of offices. Party officers were also elected.
Boman was seeking the Republican Party’s nomination to the same office until May 15th, but was a Libertarian candidate for United States Senate in 2008. In 2010 Boman placed 3rd in the election. Since ballot placement is linked to the vote totals of Secretary of State candidates, the Libertarian Party will appear 3rd on the ballot. Haas was the Libertarian candidate for Lt. Governor in 2010.
In debates and speeches, Boman emphasized his success at reaching large audiences and having experience debating all of the Republican opponents. Prior to the nomination Boman’s homepage read, “For the first time in eighteen years Michigan Libertarians will have the opportunity to nominate a United States Senate candidate with an on-going high profile campaign.” In his pre-nomination speech Boman emphasized the number of debates he had been in, as well as pointing to the fact that he had polled 6% statewide (in a February 14th study conducted by public policy polling).
Haas directed the attention of delegates to Boman’s effort to seek the Republican nomination writing, “Scotty's candidacy will cause many to conclude that the Libertarian Party is a refuge for failed and marginal Republicans, not an image that many of us want to convey.”
Upon being nominated, Boman assured Delegates that he would continue to build on the campaign he started several months prior and help Libertarians achieve major party status.

Tea Party Welcomes Boman. Hoekstra Snubs Tea Party.

Shelby Township, MI – United States Senate candidate, Pete Hoekstra backed out of a candidate forum after learning he would have to face Libertarian hopeful Scotty Boman. The forum was held by the Romeo Area Tea Party at the Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township and was moderated by WJR Radio Personality Frank Beckmann.
Boman recently announced his intent to seek the Libertarian nomination after falling short of the ballot access requirement for Republican candidates.
During introductory statements, Beckmann explained the absence of former Congressman Pete Hoekstra by saying that Hoekstra was uncomfortable with the format, and objected to the inclusion of Scotty Boman in the forum. Boman commented that he expected Hoekstra to have a “…thicker skin than that.” The following morning (May 22nd) Beckmann addressed the snub again during the first segment of his 9:00 AM to Noon radio program on WJR AM. He specifically cited comments made by Boman at a forum held on May 14th as making Hoekstra uncomfortable.
At the May 14th forum in Grandville, Boman speculated on who he would vote for in the Republican Primary if he didn’t qualify to be in it saying, “We’re still a little short and if these are the only candidates I have to choose from, I’m going with Clark Durant…He’s a person that really sticks to principle. He’s a man who has professional talent to get things done.” This forum, at Eternal Word Church, was only attended by Pete Hoekstra, Gary Glenn, Randy Hekman, Clark Durant, and Scotty Boman. Peter Konetchy (who qualified for the Republican primary) did not attend.
On his May 22nd radio broadcast, Beckmann said Hoekstra viewed Boman and Durant as “a slate,” due to Boman’s favorable remarks about Durant. When asked, Boman has clarified this as a comment about his Republican Primary preference and that he would be voting Libertarian in November.
In September of 2011 libertarian activist, Scotty Boman announced his effort to seek the Republican Party nomination for United States Senate, but fell short of the 15,000 signatures needed to file for the Republican Primary. As a result, Boman’s name cannot appear on the Republican Party’s Primary ballot.
In 2008 Boman was on the general election ballot as a Libertarian. He placed third in the election. Libertarians nominate their State-wide candidates by a self-funded convention rather than a tax-payer funded primary. As a result, Libertarians can select their candidates at conventions, while also voting in major party primaries.
In anticipation of criticism, Boman commented, “I have remained loyal to my principals throughout my political career. Since the late 1980’s I have affirmed the right of individuals to live for their own sake, and have supported expanding individual liberty in a Constitutional context. I am loyal to libertarian principals; political parties are a means to an end. I feel no shame in placing principal before party.”
The Libertarian Party will hold it’s convention on June 2nd at: Embassy Suites Livonia/Novi. 19525 Victor Parkway. Livonia, MI 48152
Another candidate, Erwin Haas, is also seeking that nomination.

Detroit, MI – The Wayne County Election Commission will meet on Tuesday, May 1st at 2:00 PM to determine the clarity of reasons cited in petition language for Carl Levin. The meeting will be held in Room 705 of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in Detroit, MI 48226. The proposed petition language reads:
“He co-authored and introduced S.1867 (the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012) which provides for the military arrest, and indefinite detention, of U.S. citizens without Constitutional due process (Subtitle D). He voted in favor of the final version (H.R. 1540). In so doing, he violated his oath or affirmation.”
One of the sponsors, Scotty Boman of Detroit (who is a candidate for United States Senate), originally attempted to deliver the petition language in person on March 29th and was turned away by Director of Elections, Delphine Oden. On April 9th Boman sent a certified letter requesting compliance with MCL168.952 which requires recall petitions to be reviewed for clarity by the “board of county election commissioners.” Boman received notification of the hearing on April 24th. Boman summarized the exchange saying, “They were served and now it’s on.” The other sponsor of the effort is Warren Raftshol of Suttons Bay.
Both sponsors cite Levin’s pivotal roll in provisions they describe as “de facto martial law,” as there reason to initiate the recall effort. The recall would require 468,709 signatures. Boman said, “Warren and I can’t do this on our own. We can get this started with a build-it-and-they-will-come approach. In 2008 1,810,234 people voted against Carl Levin. We need to have about a quarter of these people sign the petition, and a much smaller portion to step up and be activists.
Recall advocate Barbara Willing encouraged public participation saying, “Mr. Levin has been "belligerent" to the people by allowing offensive language to pass as law in the form of NDAA. So offensive is this language that it is designed to disturb and destroy the sovereignty of the People. I invite you to attend as a first step in restoration of your God given rights.”

County Official Refuses to Accept Recall Petition from Scotty Boman

Detroit, MI - At 10:55 AM on Thursday, March 29th, 2012 Delphine Oden (a staff member of the Wayne County Clerk’s Office) refused to accept accept a petition for clarity review in defiance of Michigan election law. The petition targeted United States Senator Carl Milton Levin. Michigan election law provides for the recall of United States Senators, “168.121 United States senator; recall. Sec. 121. Persons holding the office of United States senator are subject to recall by the qualified and registered electors of the state as provided in chapter 36 of this act. (MCL Act 116 of 1954) ” Republican United States Senate candidate Scotty Boman said, “I am required to submit the petition to the board of county election commissioners for clarity review before circulating it. I was doing so in compliance with 168.952 of MCL Act 116 of 1954. The county clerk’s office is the place to do that according to Chapter 18 of The Election Officials' Accreditation Study Guide published June of 2011.”
According to Boman, “When I arrived at the office (around 10:45 AM) I informed Ms. Oden that I wished to submit a recall petition for clarity review. First she produced a printed statement directing me to file recall petitions with the state. The statement listed offices from which official may be recalled including United States Senator. I informed her that I was submitting the language for clarity review and not filing the signed petitions. She then left the counter for about 10 minutes and returned with an article entitled, “Recall of Legislators and the Removal of Members of Congress from Office.” I explained to her that she was rejecting a petition based on an opinion regarding content and that the Clarity Review process was only to establish clarity, not judge content. She still refused to accept the petition.” Section 168.952 states, “(3) The board of county election commissioners, not less than 10 days or more than 20 days after submission to it of a petition for the recall of an officer, shall meet and shall determine whether each reason for the recall stated in the petition is of sufficient clarity to enable the officer whose recall is sought and the electors to identify the course of conduct that is the basis for the recall. Failure of the board of county election commissioners to comply with this subsection shall constitute a determination that each reason for the recall stated in the petition is of sufficient clarity to enable the officer whose recall is being sought and the electors to identify the course of conduct that is the basis for the recall.”
“What is especially egregious here” says Boman “…is that she didn’t even give the review board a chance to look at the wording. All she did is hand me an article. The article is not an injunction, and it is not a law. In fact, this article doesn’t even address the notion of county staff members refusing paperwork submitted in compliance with state law. She has abused her position (under color of law) to deny the rights of Michigan voters guaranteed by Michigan law. Wayne County Clerk Cathy M. Garrett needs to instruct her to do her job. Otherwise, the clause about, Failure of the board of county election commissioners to comply… takes effect.”
The reason given for the recall was, “He [Levin] co-authored and introduced S.1867 (the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012) which provides for the military arrest, and indefinite detention, of U.S. citizens without Constitutional due process (Subtitle D). He voted in favor of the final version (H.R. 1540). In so doing, he violated his oath or affirmation.” .
Co-sponsor, Warren Raftshol, commented, “It's time to recall Carl Levin. Now.”

WASHINGTON, DC— Libertarian activist Scotty Boman has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in his race for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat. The Pledge, sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), commits signers to “oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses … and oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates."
ATR has offered the Pledge to all candidates for federal office since 1987. To date, 41 U.S. Senators and 238 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. Additionally, thirteen governors and over 1,200 state legislators have signed the Pledge.
“I want to congratulate Scotty Boman for taking the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. The American people clearly showed their displeasure last November with the tax-and-spend policies coming from Washington. They want real solutions that create jobs, cut government spending, and get the economy going again,” said Grover Norquist, president of ATR.
“By signing the Pledge, Scotty Boman demonstrates that he understands the problems of hard-working taxpayers nationwide, but especially the taxpayers of Michigan.”
“I challenge all candidates for federal office to make the same commitment to taxpayers by signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge today,” Norquist continued.
Americans for Tax Reform is a non-partisan coalition of taxpayers and taxpayer groups who oppose all tax increases. For more information or to arrange an interview please contact John Kartch at (202) 785-0266 or by email at jkartch@atr.org.

Freeland, MI – Former Republican United States Senate hopeful, Chad Dewey, has endorsed College Professor Scotty Boman for United States Senate. Dewey posted the endorsement on his webpage on October 26th:
“It appears that there are now around 7 candidates in the spotlight for the 2012 U.S. Senate election for Michigan. More may enter the race, but there is one particular candidate that I feel everyone should focus on as I strongly agree with his stance on shrinking the size of government, free market principles, and strictly adhering to the Constitution – Scotty Boman. Please check out his web site to learn more about how he intends to help restore America at http://boman12.org and his Facebook campaign page.”
Until recently, Dewey was also seeking the Republican nomination for United States Senate. Dewey announced his withdrawal from the United States Senate race on September 12th. In the announcement he wrote, “So having been given sound advice by many in the direction to take going forward, I have officially removed myself from the U.S. Senate race as a Republican candidate. Instead, I am now running as a Republican State Representative candidate for Michigan’s 96th district in 2012. While I may be running for a different office, my principles and beliefs have not changed.”
Boman posted a brief reaction on his webpage, “I am flattered and honored to be endorsed by my former opponent Chad Dewey. He holds to the same principles as I do and I am sure he will make a fine State Representative if the voters in the 96th district give him a chance.”
Boman just received the Liberty Candidates endorsement on October 25th, and won the Campaign for Liberty straw poll on August 27th. Boman will be among the candidates participating in the West Michigan U.S. Senate Debate on August 19th in Richland Michigan.

Scotty Boman Seeks Republican Nomination for U.S. Senate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

http://www.boman12.org
Detroit, MI – College professor and long-time Libertarian activist Scotty Boman has formally announced his candidacy for United States Senate via press release as of September 9th 2011. He announced the formation of an exploratory committee at the Republican Convention on January 28th, and won the Campaign for Liberty Senatorial Straw Poll on August 27th. This is not the first time Boman has run for United States Senate. In 2008 Boman ran for Carl Levin’s seat as a Libertarian, and placed third in the general election. This time, however, Boman has targeted the Republican primary.
Boman cited media bias against minor party candidates, and the opportunities afforded by TEA Party groups as two of the reasons he is running as a Republican rather than a Libertarian. According to him, “Thanks in part to the TEA Party movement, candidate forums are popping up all over the state. This is a fundamental change from prior years when campaigns could start in the spring of an election year without missing any such events.”
He also, emphasizes the need for a contrasting major party alternative to incumbent Senator Debbie Stabenow. He is especially critical of Pete Hoekstra, “In 2008 over 700 billion dollars in spoils were taken from the American taxpayers and given to Wall Street billionaires. This was the spark that ignited the modern TEA Party movement. It was also one of the pivotal actions that contributed to the current depression. Then Senator Barack Obama and Congressman Pete Hoekstra were among the lawmakers who ignored the people, and gave into elitist scare tactics. To her credit, Senator Debbie Stabenow voted against the bailout. Any challenger will have a tough time claiming superior fiscal responsibility if he supported the Wall Street bailout.”
In 2008 Boman’s campaign ran TV commercials that were critical of major party candidates, such as Carl Levin, for supporting the Wall Street bailout deal.
Boman has been active in the Libertarian Party since the late 1980’s and has run for office in every state-wide election since 1994. He served as chair of the Libertarian Party of Michigan in 2006. In 1997 he received an endorsement from the Detroit News in his bid for the Detroit City Council.
Boman’s initial involvement in the Republican Party was motivated by his active involvement in the Ron Paul Campaign. He has been twice elected to the post of Republican Precinct Delegate in Michigan’s 13th district, and has served as a local organizer for the non-partisan Campaign for Liberty.
While the party of Scotty Boman’s candidacy has changed, Boman is vocally committed to the same objectives, “My immediate goal is to give voters the opportunity to vote for a candidate who consistently supports liberty. My goal for this election cycle is to be the most principled advocate of liberty in the United States Senate.

Other attendees included Cornerstone Schools founder Clark Durant who recently declared himself a candidate for United States Senate, the family of conservative activist Gary Glenn, and supporters of businessman Peter Konetchy. Staw Poll winner Scotty Boman announced the formation of an exploratory committee at the Michigan Republican Convention in January.

Scotty Boman Launches Senatorial Exploratory Committee
http://www.torunornottorun.org
Grand Rapids, MI - Scotty Boman Launched Senatorial Exploratory Committee at the State Republican convention.
College professor and veteran libertarian activist Scotty Boman announced the formation of an exploratory committee for the purpose of testing the waters for a United States Senate run. Boman said, “I believe voters deserve a chance to replace Debbie Stabenow with someone who truly advocates less government and more liberty in all areas. I have yet to see a candidate step forward who offers such a choice. I have decided to test the waters to see if I can be that choice. Today I launch the Committee to Elect Scotty Boman for that purpose. I am taking a serious look at the Republican Primary. Anyone interested in volunteering or contributing may do so at ToRunOrNotToRun.org.”
Boman made the announcement before a group of delegates at the Republican State Convention where he was serving as an alternate. Boman was a Republican State convention delegate in both 2009 and 2010.
Boman ran for United States Senate in 2008, but received less than two percent of the vote. On his website Boman writes, “This committee’s primary purpose is to evaluate the wisdom of this venture, but part of that process will be to look into how I might do things differently.” In 2008 he was the nominee of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, now he is appealing to Republicans.
Scotty Boman was born in Detroit and is a life-long Michigan resident. Boman received an BS in physics and philosophy and an MA in physics from Western Michigan University. He also has a Masters in Teaching from Wayne State University. He is currently serving as a part-time professor at Wayne County Community College District and Macomb Community College. He teaches physics, astronomy and mathematics. He also works as a substitute in suburban school districts.
Scotty Boman has been living on Detroit’s Eastside for the last eight years.
